Claire Rosen

Claire Rosen (American, b. 1983) is a fine art photographer whose work explores the intersection of art history, nature, beauty, and the human imagination. Known for her richly staged photographs of animals, Rosen creates images that feel at once whimsical and highly composed, drawing from classical painting, Victorian ornamentation, natural history, and the visual language of fairy tales. Her photographs invite viewers into a world where animals are not simply observed, but encountered as individual presences with personality, dignity, and charm.

Rosen’s acclaimed series Birds of a Feather brings together her long-standing fascination with animals, design, and historical modes of display. In the project, live birds are photographed on location against opulent, historically inspired backdrops, including richly patterned wallpapers and textiles. Parrots, songbirds, raptors, ducks, chickens, flamingos, toucans, and owls are presented with the formality of portrait subjects, often seeming to mirror the self-conscious gestures and postures of human sitters. Through color, pattern, texture, and pose, Rosen creates a dialogue between the natural world and the decorative environments humans have long used to bring images of nature into domestic life.

The series reflects on the enduring symbolism of birds as emblems of freedom, beauty, transformation, and transcendence, while also considering the more complicated history of collecting, cataloging, and representing the natural world. Rosen’s photographs nod to artistic traditions ranging from ancient ornament and Renaissance decorative arts to William Morris wallpaper and avian illustration, yet they are unmistakably contemporary in their sense of play, intimacy, and ethical awareness. Her images ask not only how we look at birds, but why we are so drawn to them.

Rosen’s process depends on patience, sensitivity, and an understanding of animal behavior. Working with live birds requires collaboration rather than control, and the resulting portraits preserve the unpredictability and individuality of each subject. The elaborate backgrounds are carefully chosen to complement, contrast, and at times almost camouflage the birds, allowing the sitter and setting to become inseparable parts of the same visual performance.

Rosen received her B.F.A. in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006, after earlier studies at Bard College at Simon’s Rock. Early in her career, she was twice named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” lists, and her work has since been exhibited widely and featured in numerous publications. She has received awards and honors from organizations including Communication Arts, Graphis, the International Photography Awards, Prix de la Photographie Paris, and American Photography. Her first monograph, Birds of a Feather, was published in 2025. In keeping with the spirit of the project, a portion of the artist’s profits from the series is donated to support avian conservation.
