In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against richly patterned, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Great Horned Owl, 2514, Rosen places the owl before a deep red floral textile, allowing the bird’s mottled plumage and intense yellow eyes to stand in striking contrast with the softness of the background.

The great horned owl is one of the most recognizable birds of prey, known for its powerful presence, feathered ear tufts, and watchful, almost commanding gaze. Here, Rosen captures that sense of quiet authority while also emphasizing the individuality of the bird. Perched on a weathered tree stump, the owl appears alert and self-possessed, as if participating in the tradition of formal portraiture.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for her subjects. These photographs are not digitally composited. Instead, the artist brings carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in real time.
