In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against richly patterned, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Lutino Cockatiel, 7874, Rosen places the bird before a warm tan floral textile, creating a gentle tonal setting that complements the cockatiel’s pale plumage and soft yellow crest.

Lutino cockatiels are known for their light yellow and white feathers, bright orange cheek patches, expressive crests, and graceful tails. Here, Rosen captures the bird perched among winding branches, its body held upright and its head turned slightly to the side. The warm pattern of the backdrop enhances the bird’s delicate coloring, while its alert posture gives the portrait a charming sense of personality.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for her subjects. These photographs are not digitally composited. Instead, the artist brings carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows each bird’s natural movements and personality to guide the image.
