In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen brings the theatrical language of portraiture to familiar domestic birds, photographing them against richly patterned backdrops that transform the everyday into something unexpectedly elegant. In Domestic Ducks No. 0197, a small gathering of ducks appears with the quiet formality of a group portrait, each bird distinguished by its own coloring, posture, and expression.

The domestic duck, long associated with farms, gardens, and ornamental ponds, becomes newly compelling through Rosen’s lens. Set against a pale blue damask-style backdrop, the birds take on a decorative and almost aristocratic presence, their varied plumage echoing the rhythm and pattern of the wallpaper behind them.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, close observation, and respect for the birds she photographs. These are not digitally composited images. Instead, the artist brings her carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in front of the chosen setting in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows the birds’ natural movements, gestures, and interactions to guide the final image.

The result is both charming and carefully composed, inviting us to reconsider the beauty, individuality, and character of creatures often seen as ordinary. In keeping with the spirit of the project, a percentage of the artist’s profits from the series will be donated to charity.
