In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against richly patterned, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Roseate Spoonbill, 0781, Rosen places the bird before a muted pink floral textile, creating a tonal harmony between the patterned backdrop and the spoonbill’s rose-colored plumage.

Roseate spoonbills are known for their vivid pink feathers, long legs, and distinctive spoon-shaped bills, which give them an unmistakable silhouette. Here, Rosen captures the bird in profile, perched lightly on a branch with its head lowered and its body held in a graceful, elongated line. The soft floral background emphasizes the delicacy of the bird’s coloring, while its poised stance brings a sense of quiet movement and character to the image.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for her subjects. These photographs are not digitally composited. Instead, the artist brings carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in real time.
