In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against opulent, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit somewhere between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In African Penguin No. 7125, the penguin’s crisp black-and-white markings are set against Striped Paper, a backdrop whose clean vertical rhythm gives the image a sense of structure, playfulness, and graphic elegance.
The African penguin is the only penguin species that breeds on the African continent, and is recognized for its distinctive facial markings, compact form, and expressive stance. Photographed at The National Aviary in Pennsylvania, USA, in 2021, the bird appears poised and quietly charismatic, its tuxedo-like plumage and upright posture giving the portrait a formal yet endearing presence.
Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, close observation, and respect for the birds she photographs. These are not digitally composited images; the artist brings her carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds, photographing them in front of the chosen setting in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows each bird’s natural movements, gestures, and personality to guide the image, capturing moments when the subject appears calm, alert, and fully itself. The result is both elegant and full of character, inviting us to reflect on beauty, individuality, and the importance of seeing each creature as worthy of attention. In keeping with the spirit of the project, a percentage of the artist’s profits from the series will be donated to charity.
