In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against richly patterned, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Red Green Macaw, 7301, Rosen places the bird before a floral textile in earthy greens and reds, creating a richly layered setting that echoes the brilliance of the macaw’s plumage.

Red and green macaws are known for their vivid coloring, long tails, and powerful, graceful presence. Here, Rosen photographs the bird from behind, emphasizing the cascade of red, green, blue, and turquoise feathers that run down its back and tail. The floral pattern behind it creates a decorative rhythm, while the bird’s stillness gives the image a formal, almost regal quality.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for her subjects. These photographs are not digitally composited. Instead, the artist brings carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows each bird’s natural movements and personality to guide the image.
