In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against richly patterned, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Roseate Spoonbills, 0769, Rosen places two spoonbills before a muted pink floral textile, creating a soft and romantic setting that echoes the birds’ rose-colored plumage.
Roseate spoonbills are known for their vivid pink feathers, long legs, and distinctive spoon-shaped bills, which give them an unmistakable silhouette. Here, Rosen captures the birds in a moment of graceful movement, with one spoonbill extending its wings while the other reaches downward from the branch. The composition feels delicate and animated, balancing the elegance of the patterned backdrop with the natural energy of the birds.
Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for her subjects. These photographs are not digitally composited. Instead, the artist brings carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows each bird’s natural movements and personality to guide the image.
The result is lyrical, refined, and full of life. Roseate Spoonbills, 0769 reflects Rosen’s ability to transform an encounter with living birds into a portrait that feels both decorative and deeply alive. In keeping with the spirit of the project, a small percentage of the artist’s profits from the series will be donated to charity.
