In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against opulent, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit somewhere between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Parakeets No. 9962, the birds’ delicate forms and lively coloring are set against a Floral Damask Textile backdrop, whose soft patterning creates a graceful dialogue between natural plumage and decorative design.

Parakeets, often associated with sociability, movement, and bright flashes of color, bring a sense of lightness and animation to the image. The work captures the birds as individual subjects within a shared ornamental space, allowing their subtle variations in color, posture, and gesture to emerge.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, close observation, and respect for the birds she photographs. These are not digitally composited images; the artist brings her carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds, photographing them in front of the chosen setting in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows the birds’ natural movements, gestures, and interactions to guide the final image. The result is both delicate and carefully composed, inviting us to reflect on beauty, individuality, and the long human impulse to admire and symbolize the natural world. In keeping with the spirit of the project, a percentage of the artist’s profits from the series will be donated to charity.
