In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against opulent, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit somewhere between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Yellow-Naped Amazon with Budgerigars, Rosen expands the portrait into a lively, layered scene, pairing the larger green Amazon parrot with a fluttering group of budgerigars.

The yellow-naped Amazon, named for the yellow feathers at the back of its neck, is an intelligent and highly expressive parrot native to Mexico and Central America. Here, it appears among budgerigars, small Australian parakeets known for their social, flocking behavior. The wallpaper, with its printed birds, branches, and foliage, creates a wonderful visual echo, allowing the living birds to move in and out of a decorative world that seems almost made for them.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, close observation, and respect for the birds she photographs. These are not digitally composited images; the artist brings her carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds, photographing them in front of the chosen setting in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows the birds’ natural movements, gestures, and interactions to guide the final image. The result is both animated and carefully considered, inviting us to reflect on beauty, individuality, and the long human impulse to admire and symbolize the natural world. In keeping with the spirit of the project, a percentage of the artist’s profits from the series will be donated to charity.
