In Birds of a Feather, Claire Rosen photographs live birds against richly patterned, historically inspired backdrops, creating portraits that sit between natural history, decorative art, and contemporary photography. In Scarlet Macaw, 8048, Rosen places the bird before a deep red damask textile, creating a dramatic tonal setting that intensifies the macaw’s brilliant plumage.

Scarlet macaws are known for their vivid red, yellow, and blue feathers, long tail, and striking presence. Here, Rosen photographs the bird from behind, turning attention to the rich color and elegant structure of its wings and tail. The saturated red backdrop creates a nearly theatrical atmosphere, while the branch introduces a natural counterpoint to the formal pattern of the textile.

Rosen’s process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for her subjects. These photographs are not digitally composited. Instead, the artist brings carefully selected wallpapers and textile backdrops to the birds and photographs them in real time. Rather than forcing a pose, Rosen allows each bird’s natural movements and personality to guide the image.
