Mads Christensen

Mads Christensen (born 1971) is a Danish‑American artist whose pioneering light sculptures fuse custom software with finely tuned engineering to create immersive visual experiences. Trained as an electrical engineer at the Technical University of Denmark, he combines his technical expertise with an artist’s sensibility—drawing inspiration from the sun’s eternal rhythms and the emotional resonance of light and time.

Early in his career, Christensen attracted international attention when Giorgio Armani selected him for the Armani Art Exchange project in 2000, and he won the North American Polaroid International Photography Award in 2002 for his innovative use of instant film. Since relocating to Los Angeles, he has exhibited widely—from solo shows like AI: Artistic Intelligence (2020) at High Line Nine in New York to public installations at the Jerusalem Light Festival (2017).

Christensen’s works—each driven by proprietary code—never repeat, offering constantly evolving patterns that engage viewers in a dialogue between technology and the natural world. Recent projects include the monumental LED piece Bloom Unfolded (2024) at the Museum of Art + Light and interactive installations at Burning Man. Through his continual experimentation with form, color, and temporal dynamics, Christensen extends a legacy of light art—following in the footsteps of Turrell, Flavin, and Eliasson—while charting entirely new territories of sensory immersion.
