“The East Room farewell in 1974 was one of the century’s most important presidential moments. For the first time in history, an American president was resigning. I knew Mrs. Nixon was an emotional person, not as stiff as the press had made her out to be. During President Nixon’s poignant speech to his staff on his last day in office, Mrs. Nixon and the family stood strong and straight, but her eyes told the story. Venerable White House correspondent Helen Thomas turned to me and whispered, “Look at this woman. She’s amazing, just amazing.”” – Harry Benson
