Hilde Moray

Hilde Moray (born 1985) is a Swedish photographer whose introspective work explores themes of identity, community, and social justice. Born in Stockholm, she studied photography at the Royal Institute of Art, where she apprenticed under documentary artist Karin Bengtsson and was awarded a DAAD‑Berlin studio residency in 2010.

Early in her career, Moray’s series on urban migration—published as the monograph Faces of Belonging (2012)—drew attention for its empathetic storytelling and innovative use of mixed media. In 2015 she received the Hasselblad Foundation Photography Award and was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet grant, cementing her reputation for work that bridges fine art and social documentary.

Moray has served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Arts London and leads annual workshops on portrait and conceptual photography, mentoring a new generation of image‑makers. Her 2024 solo exhibition, Shifting Grounds, paired large‑scale prints with archival fragments to invite viewers into conversations about home, memory, and displacement.

“I believe photography is the bridge between memory and empathy,” Moray says—a guiding ethos visible in every project she undertakes. Her pioneering approach continues to inspire artists and activists alike, reminding us that a single image can spark profound dialogue and change.
