Through a painter's lens

If any two visual art forms can be linked together in their development and potentials they are painting and photography. Both provide us with two-dimensional presentations of a three dimensional world. Shortly after photography was invented, painters learned to rely on the photographic image to structure and compress a non-linear world. If we look back to the late 1800's and early 1900's when albumen and salt prints were the forerunners of modern photographs - painters were often enthusiastic collectors of the work of early photographers. Many artists were so interested in this new medium that they learned to take photographs themselves. Painters were fascinated by the photographic image and often provided the subject for creating their work.
