From another point of view - photographers exhibiting as early as 1905 in Stieglitz's Gallery 291 were trying to produce photographs that had an inherently painterly aesthetic. The early proponents, who championed that photography was the newest art, rather than a scientific curiosity, encouraged photographers to address the painterly qualities of tone, texture, and composition in their finished works.
