Think Cool: Summer Pictures for Hot Days

07/12/2014 - 08/23/2014

The survey exhibition of esteemed photographers' work includes George Hoynigen-Huene, Bruce Mozert, Bruce Weber, and Michael Kahn. The exhibition suggests one possible escape from the enveloping summer heat through the imagined world of photography. This collection of photographs brings the viewer to more comfortable and inviting settings that may include beach, surf, sands, and scenes of cool summertime leisure. The photographers in the group exhibition “Think Cool” have been chosen because of their ability to capture impressions creating memorable and refreshing photographs. Their images can visually transport us to refreshing scenes for the summertime making this exhibition a uniquely beautiful survey of how photography can suggest an alternative world. It engages our senses and immerses us in scenes of a summer retreat.

George Huyningen-Huene was instrumental in producing some of the most elegant images in the “Age of Glamour” during the 1920s and 1930s. Often shooting swimwear from the period in pool or beach settings, Huene’s images offer a distinctive kind escape to that of a bygone era where elegance reigned in the coolest of settings. For instance, Huene’s most famous image of the “Divers (Swimwear by Izod)” brings the viewer onto the very diving board where the figures are seated and begs you to plunge into the ocean that stretches to the horizon.

Bruce Mozert’s imaginative underwater photography captured an early period and a unique time in not only Florida’s past, but also in the postwar years of America. For over four decades he composed scenes with submerged people doing seemingly everyday yet dreamlike activities given the underwater context. His scenarios were created to “sell” the Silver Springs Park as a tourist destination and his images continue to beg us to take the plunge and immerse ourselves in a cool underwater world.

Bruce Weber is primarily known for his men’s fashion photography having modernized the genre by the 1980s. Often depicting men and women in snapshot like images creating spontaneous almost vernacular moments of delight frolicking and on a beach or in boats. Weber depicts the beauty in the human figure while transporting the viewer into an idyllic and leisurely world.

Michael Kahn merged his two passions of photography and sailing together in 1995 after feeling compelled to capture the magnificent form of a century old boat racing in a lake. From this point to the present, Kahn’s ability to elegantly document and capture the almost ethereal and dream-like forms of the smallest sailboats on a lake to yachts forging ahead in the high seas compels the viewer to partake in a relaxing or adventuresome summertime pursuit.

Seen as a whole, the diversity of the photographers that comprise “Think Cool” join in their ability to produce a visual reprieve from summer’s pervasive heat and open our imaginations to take us to surroundings perhaps offering a respite in pleasurable atmospheres. This body of images demonstrates the innate ability of photography to transport the viewer into another time and another world.
