Scene & Seen: Images to Awaken the Inner Traveler

05/17/2014 - 07/05/2014

Summer is a time of travel, a time to open new horizons and venture away from the familiar and the known. Journeys into new worlds stimulate a curiosity and perhaps new perspectives on the world. From its earliest days, photography has been used to record and document the world at large. The innate ability of the medium to enlarge the visual world outside our limited perspectives remains one of the medium’s most outstanding attributes. Encouraging one’s sense of adventure, photography of foreign and perhaps inexplicable scenes share the photographer’s own adventure with the viewer, often inspiring and whetting one’s appetite for travel outside of comfortable or known surroundings. The photographers in the group exhibition “Scene & Seen” have been chosen because of their breadth of experience and their ability to capture impressions and create memorable photographs. Their images remind us of how large the visual world can be, how much there is to experience as well as the diversity inherent in the planet we call home. This exhibition inspires us to explore the unfamiliar, and the uniquely beautiful. It expands our world and engages our senses.

Alison Wright is an international documentary photographer who sees herself as a humanitarian and who has devoted her life to not just one region of the world, but its entirety. She has spent a career capturing the universal human spirit through both her photographs and writing. For many of her editorial and commercial projects including work for National Geographic, Wright travels to all regions of the globe photographing endangered cultures and people while covering issues concerning the human condition. Her luminous and inspiring portraits of individuals from the plateau of Tibet to the continent of Africa, celebrate the tapestry of humanity in all of its diversity and splendor, opening viewers’ eyes to the variety of the human experience.

Nick Brandt photographs almost exclusively in East Africa. One of his goals is to record a visually poetic last testament to the wild animals and places before they disappear at the hands of man and global environment changes. His work is a combination of epic panoramas of animals within dramatic landscapes and graphic portraits more akin to studio portraiture of human subjects from the early 20th century. The photos are an elegy to the animals and landscape that are steadily vanishing and are presented to view not simply as portrayals of the exotic, but also to increase awareness about this unstable part of the world and to encourage positive change before destruction is inevitable.

The subject matter of Massimo Listri is architecture throughout the world. His images take the photography enthusiast on another type of adventure. Listri has become renowned for his portrayals of interiors of grand and historic structures often gaining privileged access to such locations as the Vatican Museums and a variety of majestic spaces not only across Europe, but also in locations in Mexico and Thailand. Listri exposes the viewer to these unique environments that have aesthetic and historic wealth in such a way that he also preserves their beauty and highlights their aesthetic significance. He instills a feeling of grandeur that permeates the interiors of his compositions inviting the viewer to enter these spaces while instilling a sense of calmness through his intuitive sense of perspective, classical composition, equilibrium, and use of natural light.

Taken as a whole, the diversity of the photographers included in the exhibition unite in their ability to invite the viewer into different worlds and open visual doors and windows capturing the unique beauty around the globe. Through the eyes of the photographers we are also offered their own point of view and perspectives on the world while also instilling their spirit and infinite curiosity into our own lives. A great photograph should cause us to both look and think. These collection of pictures will hopefully motivate us to reflect beyond wherever we might call home.
