Re-Imagine - Re-Invent

01/18/2013 - 02/16/2013

INSTALLATION IMAGES

"Re-Imagine - Re-Invent" is an exhibition that allows photographers a chance to visually construct worlds for the purpose of creating photographic images. Quite often photographers are motivated by concepts and their challenge is to find a visual equivalent that expresses what they are thinking or feeling.

During the early days of photography there was an unspoken understanding that the truth was out their for the taking and photographers merely had to act as 'flies on the wall' and capture that part of their visual experience that was either expressive or informative. The camera was a machine that objectified the world onto film and what we saw was in some way real or "true."

As photography has been mainstreamed into the larger art market and its probabilities have broadened through more sophisticated cameras and printing out techniques, photographers and artists can explore potential worlds that either heighten reality or present physicality to an imagined world. The challenge of the work in "Re-Imagine - Re-Invent" is to find and explore desires, fears beliefs and various ideas and give them a visual approximation.

These artists build an image out of various visual components and create photographs that often exist only for the camera. Some artists build sets, some use Photoshop or other programs to build composite images that are elaborately layered and assembled. Often the photographers in this exhibition are the subjects of the pictures and they provide us clues or hints within the photographs to interpret them. They construct private worlds that express messages about a larger and more universal world.

The photographs in "Re-Imagine - Re-Invent" do precisely this - they give us new ways to think of the world and demonstrate how visual imagery can be a touchstone to take us into deeper, more complex worlds. The photographs are meant to engage our senses and minds on many levels. There is no longer just 'one' truth.
