Looking at Fashion

Fashion photography has always been intrinsically linked to our cultural notions of beauty. The dynamic range of fashion photographs, both in style and content, is influenced by the changes of tastes and attitudes as well as social and cultural events. Fashion photographers have also relied on the graphic styles of such movements as: art deco, pop, minimalism, and deconstruction when creating fashion images and layouts. Fashion photographers have created a visual language that has changed dramatically from the elegant sensibility, and luxury of the prosperity of the European and American economy of the 40’s and 50’s. It reflected the youth revolution of the 60’s. The photographers’ work further evolved from the consumerism that marked the 80’s and 90’s to the studied, unpolished ‘slice of life’ pictures that we often see today. The continuous link in the work of the great fashion photographers was to find creative ways to glamorize, celebrate and ultimately sell the fashion creations that they photographed.
