FOCUS ON COLLECTING

04/12/2013 - 06/12/2013

Every gallery is unique and defined by the artists that they present. In this exhibition the gallery is presenting a range of the contemporary photographers that they represent. Since our last exhibition was historic and traditional in its view, we are now showing photographs that are a range of different sizes and are inspired by different sources.

The self-portraits by Kimiko Yoshida are elaborate self-portraits that refer to classic and Renaissance paintings which depict important female subjects throughout history. The cyanotypes of John Dugdale are also self-portraits and still lifes that are inspired by 19th century photography. They pay homage to early masters of photography such as Fox Talbot, Margaret-Cameron, and Frederick Evans. They are organically printed in a deep expressionist hue. Karin Hillmer has worked on a series of collages based on the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges. They are beautifully constructed, mixed media compositions that explore notions of time, space and memory. The photographs of Harry Benson are the most traditional component to the show. We are presenting a small collection of historical personalities captured by the penetrating eye of Mr. Benson. Subjects include, the Beatles, past Presidents, Warhol, and Verushka, among others. Jim Lee’s works also hang in this exhibition. He is a well know fashion based photographer who has for the last 4 decades produced a cutting edge body of work in film and photography. He puts a fresh twist on fashion and life style with his cinematic, auteur approach to cropping and subject matter.

The above are some of the photographers that we are presenting in this survey show. It is an exhibition that is unified only in the sense that all of the artists are actively working, significant image makers. It is designed to be free ranging in its scope of printing techniques, sizes, and imagery. We hope you enjoy Focus on Collecting: Chapter 1.
