East To West – We May Never Pass This Way Again

11/24/2012 - 12/10/2012

This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds
To watch the birth and death of beings is like looking at the movements of a dance.
A lifetime is like a flash of lightning in the sky,
Rushing by, like a torrent down a steep mountain.

Buddha (563 - 483 BC)

This exhibition is set up to reflect on as well as profile societies, rites of passages, people and ceremonial traditions that are either endangered, vanishing, or already belong to past history. It is a collection of photographs that celebrate as well as eulogize a changing planet. The societies and geographies depicted span the globe from Africa, to the Americas, to Indonesia and the Middle East. The time frame runs from the 1870’s to the present.

Our cosmos is in flux, both with respect to environmental issues and to social and cultural upheavals. As our modes of travel and communication have grown more sophisticated and more user friendly the world is indeed shrinking and becoming more homogenous. Our differences are no longer so striking and have become less likely to define or enrich us. Western culture and technology have become pervasive and the price we pay is measured by the traditions, customs and civilizations that we have lost or are losing.

The photographic portraits of Dana Gluckstein, Beckwith and Fisher, Jean-Baptiste Huyhn, and Javier Silva Meinel fascinate us by bringing us face to face with members of distant societies that take sustenance from their shared traditions. Nick Brandt profiles animals from Eastern Africa where environmental changes, as well human aggression, are condemning them to extinction. In the large format pictures of Bernard Faucon the locations are indiscernible but the focus of the pictures are meant to be dreamscapes that are both reductionist in their lack of a human subject and elemental in their constructions. Water, fire, ice, wind, and earth animate the pictures.

Photographs have often been thought of as windows to the world. The ‘windows’ in this exhibition present a world of great diversity and interest. The pictures are rich because their subjects are rich. The best defense for ecological and cultural stewardship is found by examining what we stand to lose in a market driven world that marginalizes cultural diversity as well as environmental sustainability. We are ultimately participants rather than owners of this cosmos and if it becomes diminished so do we.
