A BIT OF MAGIC

09/21/2013 - 11/16/2013

Photographic images both inspire and delight us. In a large measure, this explains their popularity and collectability. They are flat, two dimensional static objects. However, through “A Bit of Magic” we breathe life, vitality and meaning into them. Great photographs tag both our conscious and unconscious spirit. They present a meeting point to explore our collective and personal histories, dreams, desires, fears and wishes.

The photographs in this first exhibition of our season, “A Bit of Magic” are selected to conjure up the physical wonders around us. In Bell Soto’s Swimmer series a pool of liquid embraces the swimmer in a cocoon of blue water, lit to reveal a rhythmic undulating flow. In John Dugdale’s blue cyanotypes and gold chloride prints use the elements of iron, gold, silver and purified water in their printing process. They freeze a moment and explore the world of desires.

In Elliott Erwitt’s photographs a kiss is seen through a side view mirror and lovers under umbrellas embracing in front of the Eiffel tower highlight a few romantic moments. A small series of silver prints by Flor Garduño and Javier Silva-Meinel explore the folklore and mythology of Latin cultures in which plants, fish, birds, are given special magical powers.

In Jan Groover’s beautiful color still-life’s a Morandi like world is constructed full of luminous rich bottles, plates, candles, vessels and tables that look flat but suggest an illusionary, moody, romantic space. In Bernard Faucon’s color Fresson photographs nature is captured with a special glowing light. Fields of lavender, bundles of straw, rooms redolent with memories suggest a magical compression of time. We relive, and feel the languid summers of the south of France.

Michael Massaia’s night-time pictures of Central Park and desolate amusement parks suggest a modern world inspired by Eugene Atget. In the half-light of early morning we behold dramatic backdrops waiting for the actors in a human drama to appear. Cathleen Naundorf’s fashion pictures are artfully choreographed to evoke a dream like 19th century world of wealth and privilege. The models are dressed in unique gorgeous fashion and set in museums, theatres, gardens and other locations that have witnessed countless artistic and cultural performances. They are printed from old Polaroid film and then distressed to show the passing of time.

Valerie Belin’s photographs of personalized mannequins are elusive and layered with possible meanings. They explore the question of what is real and what is an artifact of reality. Ultimately, “A Bit of Magic” inquires about the nature of reality. Are photographs about reality or are they about our perception of reality? Maybe they have a greater wealth in their ability to suggest our feelings and thoughts about reality. Magic and reality are not contradictory, but “A Bit of Magic” is like a magic lamp that one lifts the lid off of to reveal a world of infinite richness.
