Brian Riley was born in Wall, New Jersey in 1972.
In 1990, he moved to New York and attended
Cooper Union College and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree in 1994.
Trained as a painter as well as a photographer, Riley
describes the process of photography as "like painting with
light". The photographs are derived from his desire to create
beautiful images with classical lighting and painterly backdrops.
His subject matter consists of portraiture and still lifes. He counts
his top three influences as: George Platt-Lynes, Robert Mapplethorpe
and Francis Bacon.
Brian Riley is part of a new generation of photographers,
classically trained in composition and design, but using the sophisticated
tools and opportunities afforded by the digital age. His work harmonizes
an interest in the romantic within a classic tradition. His work
has been profiled in several prestigious international fine art
journals.
